Steps Through Breast Reconstruction

This general overview of the steps through breast reconstruction may help you to understand the process and be more prepared for the time required of your journey and each step along the way.

  • Initial Consultation – Dr. Spiegel will meet with you and assess your personal situation and together you will decide the appropriate procedure for you.
  • Secondary Consultation – You will return for a follow up consultation to answer any additional questions and review any particular health concerns brought up previously. A general timeframe will now be established for your surgery.
  • Pre-operative Visit/Labs – Our Clinic Coordinator will meet with you to discuss your final details and arrange for any necessary labs or testing prior to surgery. Sometimes this can be done at the second consult visit but  generally requires an additional hour to be fully informed of all requirements.
  • First Stage Surgery – If you are undergoing autologous flap reconstruction, you will be in the hospital for generally 4 days. The first 48 hours are the most crucial for flap monitoring.  If you have tissue expander/implant reconstruction, you will be in the hospital for 1 day.
  • Post Operative Appointment – One week after surgery, you will return to the clinic for Dr. Spiegel to assess your recovery and progress.
  • Follow Up Appointments – Generally you will have your first visit one week after your surgery to assess recovery. Your second visit will be approximately two weeks after your initial post-op appointment and followed by another visit approximately one month after surgery. At approximately 3 months, you will be scheduled to come for a second consult  to discuss results and second stage surgery.
  • Implant Exchange – For tissue expander/implant reconstruction, you will need to have the expanders replaced with the actual implant at 4-6 weeks out from initial surgery.
  • Second Stage Symmetry Surgery – If any revisions are necessary to create a more symmetrical appearance, Dr. Spiegel will decide the appropriate timing for this outpatient procedure.
  • Nipple Reconstruction – If you had a mastectomy where the nipple was not left intact, one will be reconstructed for you.
  • Nipple/Areola Tattooing – For a fully pleasing aesthetic, tattooing of the nipple/areola completes your cosmetic appearance. This can be done at 6 weeks after nipple reconstruction.
  • Final Follow Up Appointment –  If you have nipple tattooing, we will have you return for follow up two weeks after, otherwise, follow up will be one year after surgery and yearly thereafter.  Of course, if at any time you have any questions, concerns or additional needs, you may contact us for another appointment. We are always here for you!
